Members can create up to 4 characters, unlocked through participation on Discord, tracked by a level-up bot. Members must spend one month in the group before creating a second character, regardless of how quickly they unlock new character slots.
Art Application
Applicants must submit a drawn application depicting at least 3/4 of the character's body to DeviantArt.com, using this template:
Feel free to adjust the colors, add imagery, make it your own, etc., as long as it stays recognizable.
We encourage extreme creativity in character designs. (We are particularly hoping to see non-bipedal, non-humanoid characters!) We have a Pinterest board with some inspiration, but please, follow your heart.
Written Application
Applicants will be judged by their ability to create interesting, exciting, well-rounded characters. You can arrange/design your written sheet in any fashion you like! Just make sure these mandatory elements are present:
Name
Age
Career Path
Stats (If you want, this does not have to be complete at submission; you can receive mod help after acceptance)
Pronouns
Species
Personality
Backstory
Roleplayer Info (your Discord name, triggers, preferred manner of roleplaying, etc.) MANDATORY: If you are 17, please disclose that. 18+ individuals cannot act responsibly if they're under the impression they are speaking to an adult. If you are uncomfortable with this for any reason, please contact a mod and we can chat.
Here are optional character-building tidbits to consider:
Religion (whether the 6 major gods, or otherwise)
Sigils (See Gods & Magic. You may start with 1 free sigil and earn more through the Shop.)
Likes & Dislikes
Strengths & Weaknesses
Relationships
Faction Affiliation (your character does not have to be aligned with a faction -- it's perfectly fine for them to be factionless, or affiliated with a group of your own creation)
Rumors (what are things, positive or negative, other characters may have heard about your OC? Great RP starter!)
Where can your character most commonly be found?
What is your character's profession?
Etc.

Characters must commit to a career path, affecting their potential in four categories.

Creating a Backstory
Keep in mind that The Godsea is a sandbox roleplay. Mods will strive to integrate all characters, but at the end of the day, your level of participation is up to you. If your character owns a tavern and hell itself could not drag xem out from it, the mods will not browbeat you into plot participation. If you prefer a high level of interaction with the questline, it's your responsibility to craft a character that's willing to participate.
You can also consult member-created lore when forming a backstory!
BACKSTORY RULES
The Godsea's story revolves around collecting six keys to lock (or release) a dark magical force that lurks beneath the Godsea. Your OC may be interested in doing this from an altruistic reason -- perhaps they're frightened by the demons that now fill the world, and want to help -- or perhaps they were present at High Hall on the day of the Godsgoing Festival, and also bear the red hand-mark that seals their souls. Either way, you are responsible for figuring out how your character becomes involved with the story (and a mod would be happy to help you!)
No character may begin with a high-tier rank in the five plot factions (Navy, Black Flags, Red Dynasty, Goldhands, Wizards). You can achieve promotions if it feels appropriate given your roleplaying choices.
In member-created factions, feel free to hold any rank! If you make up a guild, it would be natural to claim leadership of it.
We have too many Red Dynasty spies, and will no longer be accepting more.
Mods will be extremely watchful of "evil" or "asshole" characters. It's easy to act like a dick. It's hard to do it well. It takes quite the talented roleplayer to run a "bad" character without sowing frustration and stirring conflict. If you want to play a "bad" character, ensure that the foremost question on your mind is, "How am I going to contribute mutually-interesting interactions for my new friends, and make sure that the people around me are having fun?"
NPCs
In addition to four unlockable character slots, members can create NPCs, either related to their character's backstory, or as a world lore addition.
Is this character a part of someone else’s bigger story, or do they have their own story you want to see get told? If it’s the former, they’re an NPC.
NPCs:
Cannot participate in plot events
May be present in non-plot RP channels, but should not have public RPs centered on them
May be mentioned in the 21-Questions and Headcanon channels, but should not be more central than full characters
Exist to support other members' and characters' stories, not fulfill a storyline of their own
Do not abuse the ability to make NPCs. If mods feel that a member is cranking out NPCs in order to avoid earning character slots, a strike will be awarded.

Tips and Tricks
This is a new section added on 3/6/2022. Now that we've had two openings, we see a few common pitfalls!
Please do not start your app with "their early life was a mystery." Remember that the purpose of your app is to TELL us their backstory! Regardless of if your OC knows about their early life, you need to tell us, the mods, about it.
Please remember that piracy is a pretty extreme lifestyle choice! We see quite a few apps that sort of just end with "so they became a pirate." We would love to have more Black Flags in the group, but we hope that it feels integrated with your character's personality and story.
I would recommend against a generic "they are motivated to explore the Godsea and see new places!" character goal. We've seen this quite a bit, and also, unfortunately, that tends not to be as interesting as a specific goal or motivation. (Even something like "they're motivated to explore the Godsea to ______" would be so much more compelling!)
